  1. Hi Betsy,

that sure sounds accurate according to the calculations done.. but considering the real life example, 2 hours seems high for one sheet of paper!

I decided to figure out how much energy is saved by recycling one sheet of office paper. Any feedback on whether I have the right figures and did the calculation correctly? My final number is higher than I expected.

1 ton of paper saves 4100 kwatt hours
1 “pallet” of copier paper (20-lb. sheet weight, or 20#) weighs approximately one ton
1 pallet of paper = 40 cartons of paper
    1 carton of paper = 10 reams
    1 ream = 500 sheets

    1 ton of paper = 40 cartons x 10 reams x 500 sheets = 200000 sheets
    1 sheet of paper = 4100 Kwatt hrs / 200000 = 0.0205 kwatt hours = 20.5 Watt/hours

Therefore, recycling one sheet of paper saves 0.0205 kwatt hours (20.5 Watt/hours).

This number seems high considering some real-life examples. For example, I have a small 6-inch fan that is rated at 10 watts. If I run that fan for 1 hour, I’m using 10 watts. If I run it for 2 hours, I’m using 20 watts. So this means that recycling one sheet of paper saves enough energy to run this fan for 2 hours.
    Does that sound accurate?
